Description

The new Ultimaker 3 is on all fronts an improvement over its forerunner, but the most important advantage is surely the addition of a second printhead. With it the device can print with two materials at the same time. The nicest application of this is the printing of in-water-soluble support materials. Here you place the object after printing in water and all the support materials will melt away like snow in the sun. And that without needing to fiddle around for hours with sandpaper.

Further improvements and changes:

  • Layer resolution of up to 20 micron with a 0.4 mm nozzle
  • Print temperature of up to a maximum of 536 degrees Fahrenheit (280 degrees Celsius)
  • Build volume of 8.5 x 8.5 x 7.9 inches (215 x 215 x 200 mm)
  • Replaceable print cores
  • Heatable printbed with active bed-leveling

Due to the new modular printheads and the fact that the printhead as well as the heated bed can handle higher temperatures, printing with for example polycarbonate is now also a possibility. With the exception of PLA, ABS, PETG, Nylon and a few other flexible filaments, you can, thanks to the printhead, also use support materials such as PVA, HIPS and PolySupport.

Exterior
The exterior of the device and the structure of the printer has changed little relative to the previous model. However, the build surface is 8.5 x 8.5 x 7.9 inches (215 x 215 x 200 mm) (when in use with a nozzle; 7.8 x 8.5 x 7.9 inches), which is a fraction smaller. This is usually enough to print most objects, but if you need more room, then perhaps the Ultimaker 3 Extended is a better choice for you.

While the Ultimaker 2 was already very silent, the Ultimaker 3 with just 50 dB of noise can be almost considered to be a noiseless 3D printer and as such is ideal to be used in a work environment.

Cura 2
The Ultimaker 3 is shipped with Ultimaker's own open source software for free in the new Cura version 2. The most used slicer-software at the moment is very user-friendly and in the newest version with new network and remote monitoring capabilities, more attention is given for working in the cloud. Cura 2 is naturally usable on Windows, Linux as well as Mac.
